20 Km down the hill from Cyrene to Apollonia is stunning, with the road swooping down dramatically from the escarpment to the plain below.
The ancient city of Apollonia was built to provide a port for Cyrene. It is right on the coast in a very attractive setting, with the hills behind and the sea in front. After Cyrene, Apollonia is the most rewarding of the Greek cities to visit. Also there are underwater ruins just offshore from the ruins, parts of the city having been submerged over the centuries there is a small museum in the centre of the old section of Sussa, it has a small but interesting collection of Greek funerary statues and some mosaics from Apollonia and nearby Rass Al-Halal there is also a charming collection of miniature offering figures. And more to see.
